I'm excited to know that God sometimes uses even the smallest situations to encourage us!
Have you ever experienced the peace, presence, and encouragement of God as you did something so natural like
answer a question, or simply respond to a comment made by one of your children?
This very situation happened to me recently as my son and I were riding in the car. I've come to realize that the Lord uses my children often to encourage me, and He also uses certain situations concerning them to teach and sometimes humble me as well.
This particular day while riding in the car, we came to a stop as we awaited an opportunity to turn from a parking lot unto the main street. While waiting, my son observed a man riding his bicycle along the road. As the man approached what seemed to be a rather steep hill, my son watched closely wondering if the man would be able to make it without stopping. He was astonished by the way the bicyclist rode up and over the hill with ease, and it was in that moment that he blurted out, "I'm surprised that man didn't stop before he went up the hill, I know that I probably would have!"
Naturally, I responded and began to teach my son about KEEPING MOMENTUM while riding a bike, especially when you notice that you're approaching a hill. As I began to explain this concept to him, It didn't take long for me to tune in and actually listen to myself. I then recognized how God was using that situation to encourage me.
I said to my son, "If you're going up a hill, it's better to keep going and DO NOT SLOW DOWN. As a matter of fact, it is good to actually pick up your speed a little bit so that it will be easier to go over the hill and not get stuck in the process. If you stop just before you go up the hill it'll be more difficult to get OVER it, you have to keep your momentum!"
As I made that point clear to my son, I began to self reflect and think about how I sometimes tend to respond when I am approaching a "hill" in my life.
It is so easy to stop and look at the "hill", then become discouraged while I'm trying to figure out the best way to get over it.

It is so easy to become afraid of what I see and stop moving altogether, instead of just keeping momentum and not letting the size of the "hill" make me stop and wonder if I'll be able to make it.
It is so easy to try and take control of the situations that arise in our lives daily, but we must understand, believe, and rest in the fact that God has everything in control. He won't allow any "hills" or "mountains" to be present in our lives if we don't have what it takes to make it over them.
Our "hills" come to strengthen us spiritually just as they help to physically strengthen a bicyclist. Romans 8:28 remind us that "All things work together for the good of them that love the Lord, and are the called according to His purpose."
Every bit of what we go through or have to deal with, is for a purpose. We can't always see the end of a thing from where we are, but IF we just keep going(Don't give up), pick up the speed a little (Draw closer to God than ever before), and then maintain our momentum (Don't slow down or let up) we will make it to the other side safely (Whole, in our right mind, and in the will of God).
This to me was more than a teachable moment for my son, it was an encouraging moment for me and I could feel the love and peace of God as He ministered right in the midst of that teachable moment. No matter the size of the "hill", Don't Stop ....Just Keep Going!
